The Butler University Bassoon Reed Company (BUBRC) is unique. It is a partnership between the Butler University Bassoon Studio and students in the Lacy School of Business. As far as we know, Butler University is the only college that has a student-run reed business. All products are made by current Butler Bassoon students using materials, processes, and specifications designed and approved by the Butler bassoon faculty. These students are well-trained in the various elements of reedmaking. They are in direct contact with Butler’s bassoon professors who oversee each student’s reedmaking education. When you buy reeds from BUBRC, you are assured of getting quality products from active bassoonists who know bassoons and bassoon reeds. Your business supports these students towards gaining valuable business skills and professional experience.
Reeds will be normally be shipped within two business days of receiving an order. If there is any delay, the customer will be notified. Reeds will be shipped via the USPS. Shipping time will vary depending on location.
The Butler University Bassoon Studio is led by full-time bassoon professor, Doug Spaniol.
Students in the Butler Bassoon Studio have achieved some amazing things like being named finalist in the Meg Quigley Vivaldi Competition and alternate in the IDRS Young Artist Competition. Six students have been named winner in the JCA Concerto Competition leading to concerto performances with the Butler Symphony Orchestra. Butler bassoon students have also won prizes in competitions sponsored by Pi Kappa Lambda, Matinee Musicale, the Kokomo Symphony Orchestra, Kokomo Park Band, and others.
Butler bassoon students have performed with several professional ensembles: the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, Louisville Orchestra, Fort Wayne and Evansville Philharmonic Orchestras, as well as Anderson, Carmel, Danville (IL), Kokomo, and Lafayette Symphony Orchestras— just to name a few. Many teach private lessons through the Butler Community Arts School and elsewhere in Indianapolis.
Graduates of the Butler Bassoon Studio have been accepted to many leading graduate schools in the US and have received impressive assistantship and scholarship offers. Many have moved on to great careers, often combining their musical training with skills learned in a second major or other classes at Butler. These include positions at Carnegie Hall, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, and teaching positions at universities and public school districts.
