Prevention & Education
Here at Butler, we look out for one another and work to build a strong, healthy, and connected community. This includes creating a culture in which healthy relationships are the norm, consent is always sought and received before sexual activity, and everyone takes small steps to prevent people from experiencing harm or causing harm to others.
All of our prevention and education efforts are aimed at achieving this goal. Below you will find information about prevention and education for both students and employees. The Sexual Misconduct Prevention Taskforce helps to inform all of these efforts.
Prevention and Education for Students
Prevention and education for Butler students begins before they arrive on campus. All new incoming Butler students are required to complete the online course U Got This!, Your Guide to Speak Up, Step In, and Create a Better Campus for All from Catharsis Productions. This interactive course shares information about interpersonal violence (sexual assault, dating violence, domestic violence, and stalking), and provides tools to help students take steps to prevent people from experiencing or causing this type of harm. During Welcome Week, new students will also take part in in-person sexual misconduct prevention programming.
Throughout their time at Butler, students will have many opportunities to engage in ongoing prevention education. The Sexual Assault Response and Prevention Specialist (SARP Specialist) leads these prevention education efforts. More information about prevention education opportunities for students can be found on the Office of Sexual Assault Response and Prevention website.
Faculty, staff, and students may request a prevention education program for their class, student organization, student employees, etc.
Prevention and Education for Employees
Butler employees are also expected to engage in prevention and education programs. All new staff receive in-person training from the Title IX Coordinator during New Staff Orientation. The Title IX Coordinator also presents at New Faculty Orientation.
In addition to in-person training, all new employees are expected to complete online training on Sex- and Gender-Based Discrimination and Harassment. All employees will also be required to complete continuing online education every two years.
Faculty and staff may request a prevention education program for their department, College, etc.
